  • Lost 4th gear?

Been out in the car today, drove spot on. Went to take it take it home and it's lost 4th gear? Just nothing happens when you select it
Anyone have any idea what could have happened? Obviously the box is going to have to come out, I just find it strange that there's no drive at all in 4th. Got to my lockup, and you can even start the car in 4th with no clutch.

normally 3rd is the weak gear, 4th is direct drive.

rebuild time Gary or save the money and put it towards an uprated box.

        Dave.

Cheers Steve! I was hoping there was someone local who could have a look at it.

Bit of an update on this. I give Pete a ring this morning who's box it is, and he's never heard of a box go in just 4th
But it can't be a snapped shaft or stripped gears etc as no gears would work. He reckons it'll be the bolt sheard off the end which is causing 4th to spin with no drive. So should be a cheap fix, fingers crossed.

I'd lay odds you sheared the dog ring /syncro ring off the body of the gear hub. It dosnt have to be raw power but shock from hard overly fast gear changes can damage the syncro /dog rings. 4th gear might not be a gear exactly but it still has a full synchro and syncro hub/dog ring. Yes shearing the I/p gears would mean loss of all drive except 4th. But if the synchro ring parts from the gear body/hub it normally does it quite gentlemanly and can give no noise or in fact any further issues except no 4th gear. Its a very common issue with standard synchro hubs granted 4th not being that common as it happens but they can fail . They all normally fail quite placidly causing little collateral damage. you might need a new I/p shaft as 4th gear synchro / dog ring is on the end of the shaft.
