  • temp guage problem?

right here it goes i noticed last year going upto donningtion for national day that my temp guage was going into the red so while i was there i undone the bleed valve screw to relive any air that was in there but no joy,so over the winter i changed the rad for a spec r alloy rad and also changed the thermostat but im still having the same problem any ideas fellas coz im confused now

Is it a gradual thing Adam, i.e. the gauge doesn't go into the red when the ignition is switched on?

Have you checked the rad pipes to ensure ones not significantly colder than the other, how long is it taking from starting the car to creaping up into the red?

Is it actually overheating as the temperature sender might be at fault?

I was thinking that Mike, but would have thought if the sensor was goosed it would either not register or go straight to the top of the gauge once the ignition is on, but hey I could be completely wrong there lol

If its a thermistor type stat, ie differing resistances dependant on temperature than this may be at fault. When it reaches high temperature the resistance changes more than at room temperature,
You can check resistance by immersing in boiling kettle water and seeing what resistances should be . Or just buy or loan another sensor. Matt Lewis are cheap for stats., that's where I'd start.

hi ben yes i have checked all the pipes and they are all hot at the same time it does not go straight into the red but gradually gets there and ive also noticed that when i turn on the blower its not getting hot at all (could it be head casket on its way out hope not ) also when it does get hot ie in the red it comes down a little bit and then goes back up

when you say you turn on the blower and it doesn't get hot, what do you mean? What fan speed and what does the gauge read?

When mine weeped at the front corner I noticed it getting hotter around 90 but normal cruising would be ok, but needle always used to register over halfway. 4 or 5 years later after it was changed it reads around a needle width under halfway on the gauge no matter what

Check the radiator. Make sure that when the car's up to temp the rad has even temp at the top and bottom. Could also be the matrix for the heaters, best way to check is join the two pipes coming out the firewall together which by-passes the heaters. Run the car up and see if the temp goes back to norm.

if all pipes are getting hot , it cant be the thermostat . if you have no air lock around heater [which means heater is hot ] .so cant be that .. you have new rad ,and fans are working you say ., so im afraid only thing left is head gasket problems . cylinder leakage test is the best way to check this . you put regulated compressed air into each plug hole at top dead centre [valves closed] to see if you have bubbles into header tank meaning leaking gasket around that cylinder .
1 off the signs for head gasket problems is higher temps
more pressure in cooling system is another symptom
worst case synario .you could have cracked block as this is not un heard off .

full fan speed and needle reading just into the red

i fear this is the worst scenario is there any where in the northants area that would be able to fix this as i dont like to leave it with cowboys or just a bit further a field

what about water pipe leading to turbo as i have noticed there was a few drips coming from that area and when i have my foot on accelarator temp goes up but when i take my foot of it temp drops down
