  • Adjustments to make car feel planted

    Evening all

What adjustments to the cars suspension and anything else if possible can be made to make the car feel more planted? I drove mine the other day and pushed it quite hard in the cool air and it just felt very light. I know that people rave about these 6 degree beams but I simply can't justify the outlay on these. I am running standard GAZ coil overs that i have tweaked to a nice ride along with poly bushes everywhere, and an alloy front strut brace if that helps, Would a proper geometry setup help and is there that much to be adjusted front and rear on standard non adjustable parts?

    Thanks as always
    Mart.

2 degrees TOE in overall on the front and nowt on the rear as it can't be adjusted without the 6 degree beam. I suppose fitting adj TCAs would help too. Best speak to the gurus on here who will know way more than me.

I know the 6 degree beam is the best way but can you not do it cheaply with shims

You can do it that way mike has that measurement... Sure he will chime in tomorrow

Them wheels 19's arnt they? Not sure how wide they are or what width tyres you have but as other members have said beam on the back and adjustable tca on front, or shims on rear and adj tca's on front have it setup to an aggressive road spec... imo smaller wheels would make it feel and drive a lot better on the road also 8 wide in 18's or even 17's would be better and not such a wide tyre will help with tram lining and give the car a more planted feel...

Mike R is defo the best person to tell you exactly what you want the above is what I can remember from when I had a road car...

Standard front end bar polybushes and alignment check, six deg beam and set up, perfect

Bit of a dark art the geo thing to me, wish i had a better understanding of it really

I run with a touch of 'toe in' on the front as opposed to the parallel factory settings and i do find this stabilises the front end well but it seems to be at the cost of slightly killing the outside edge of the front tyres......... strangely not something i noticed when i had Goodyear Eagles but its defo hurting the Michelin Pilot sports so will soon be swopping the wheels front to rear

I have the 6 deg beam and the adj. tca's and still find i'm not entirely happy with how planted it feels. I do kind of think that the way it 'feels' and the way it 'is' is not always the same thing......... by that i mean i can be driving at 5 tenths of my ability and find myself being a bit unsure of it but then get brave and push up to 8 tenths and actually be surprised and pleased to find that it's more confidence inspiring the more i 'push on'

For you, today was probably not a good day to make a judgement on the handling as the low temps will have your tyre compound quite hard........... anything under 7 degrees outside will not see your regular tyres working as designed to

Cheers ben, yes they are 19" with uniroyal rain sport 1 which are 225/35 19. My ride height for front and rear is the same at 63cm on both sides of the car, it took me ages to get them all the same!

I know the smaller wheels would help but i love these wheels and to be fair i rarely ever push my car hard at all so its no biggy, i just wanted to tweak where i could. Do these shims make a difference then?

I've got gaz and 19's fitted adjustable tca's and had a proper four wheel check set the front up to rainbird settings. Feels great

Cheers jules, i was considering nitrogen for the tyres but given how often my car ever leaves the garage i thought it a bit overkill!

Your bravery quote makes sense and i can agree with it, i know my limits though!

Thanks all for the replies and i do have some things to look at now
