What are they like as a gear box likely to spend more time broken and what power/torque can they take?
    Thanks Mark.

If you have anything above 400bhp, I'd avoid it.

Nordschleife, there's only two barriers to worry about - the ones on the left and the ones on the right .

Great thing to use......... very exciting

Can't help but think that a very well sorted stage 3 car with all the right upgrades and a six speed R&D would be a more thrilling B road blaster of a car than a 500bhp car with say a Bara box

The version with 6th gear being 1:1 would probably be the most effective on those B roads......... though you would suffer a bit on the motorway but a sacrifice worth making

As with all things there are pro's & con's......... on the downside they are a bit clunky in traffic and 1st won't always select at the lights which can be a bit embarrasing More seriously, unlike a normal box that gives a bit of resistance to being put into the wrong gear these will just go into any gear at any speed........... after a lot of mileage i only managed to do this once, but once was enough it initially survived this cock up but wasn't quite right afterwards and went bang within the next 100 or so miles

Reverse is also tricky, again because in theory you can select it whilst going 120mph forwards they put the lift ring at the bottom of the stick to prevent mishaps but then selecting reverse is a two hands on the stick operation........... unless you have fookin' massive hands lol

On the upside, and what makes it all worthwhile is that you can upchange without the clutch or lifting the throttle so with no drop in revs the acceleration is uninterrupted so the car would definately pull away from another same engine spec car .......... that said, most of the time i would change gear with the clutch as normal tosave wear on the dogs and save the clutchless changing for special occasions

I would also be very cautious about buying 2nd hand......... just because it's working well doesn't mean it's in great condition, when mine failed i thought ok i've just bust 3rd so just need one new cog but when Harvey opened it up all the unbroken gears were showing signs of pitting of the case hardening on the gear faces, so they were all on borrowed time hence needing a full rebuild at something like 3.2k iirc
If buying 2nd hand i would want it opened up for inspection first ........... if all good, at sensible power and torque and with a bit of mechanical sympathy i would like to think you would get a reasonable life span from it

I was going to say 'no, not atall' just go into it with your eyes wide open.......... but having just seen your reply to Mike about 450/500 then i would say it may not be the best option

Obviously i would say this.......... but i say go DPE ........... and then down the line when Pete finally sorts it out you'll have a box that can be returned to him to be upgraded to a synchro/Dog hybrid giving you the best of both worlds and suitable strength to go with it
