how has it been mot'd before then.

most of us run no cats and get away with it at the mot stations.

This could be right as the lad im buying the car from said that it didn't need one being 92

That's right, according to the old rules

But now, if a car came from the factory with a CAT then it must have one fitted, all Escort Cos' came with a CAT as std

if yer daft enough to tell the tester who lets face it is probably cluless about cosworths that a pre 93 car came with a cat and have taken it off then theres no hope

not forgetting that a cat is just a box on the exhaust system an any car before 1 aug 1992 will have less stringent emissions tests then your cat for the early cars can just be an empty box for all the difference it needs to make.

plus youve still got the engine swap exemptions you can use if the new engine is a 1992 or before block.

Yes you could have previously used that excuse but it now states if the car was fitted with a CAT from the factory it must have one fitted now.

but the mot manual emissions test section hasnt been changed to remove the older engine exemptions, so there is already direct conflict within the rules in the manual itself if the interpretation is as you say.

Hence why there will have to be some revisions or advice notes in the coming months if the changes are to function as VOSA intended.
