  • Getting the front shocks out

Hi guys, what's the best way to get the front shocks out, I guess I need to lever them somehow but what did you use and where do you hit to get max effect, because they seem very tight. I've removed the pinch bolts and the calipers so the hoses don't stretch, is there anything else that needs removing before they will come free from the hubs. The manual seems to mention something near where the pinch bolt mounts that you have to turn 90 degrees with a special tool, but I can't see what that is.
    Cheers
    Trev.

Are you mad, the royal wedding is on

Im leaving now, will be with you in 3 hours

Seriously, where the pinch bolt goes through put a big screw driver to make the gap bigger. This will free the shock at the hub end Lots of WD40 too

I've got a T-shirt I've been wearing today that says 'Thanks for the day off'

Cool, thanks mate, I'll give that a try.

Also, I'm trying to restud the hubs with longer studs, got the old ones off but can't seem to get the new ones in. Do I need to take the plate off and put it in the vice to give me more bashing power, and if I undo the hub nut is anything going to boing out on me?
        Cheers

I am meant to be working

You don't need to take the hub off. Clean the holes up front and back and bash them with a hammer. If that fails use a C clamp and that will pull them in. My brother has nicked mine a few times and takes him 5 minutes to change

Trev too put the new studs in put them through the holes and with some washers over the thread put a nut on and wind them on it should pull the stud into the hub
You may have to use a long bar to lock the hub up from turning

just push the studs in from behind trev then use an old wheel nut and washer to wind them in,you will be best off leaving it till youve got your brakes back on or the whole lot will just turn put the studs in and wait till someone can stand on the brake pedal for you
for the shocks thats really a 2 man job as you need someone leavering down/jumping on a bit of 3x2 while you guide the hub down and get the shock out

tighten the nut up on the stud all the way, that will pull the stud through.

have you got a slide hammer and if you do remove front hub i say only the wheel bearing inner and outer there

I tried the washers earlier, just couldn't keep the hub still, so I'll see if I can lock it somehow as Graham said.
Although the C clamp sounds good too, I've got one somewhere.

Some good ideas for the shocks too. Thanks guys.

Gonna have a break from it now for a while and try and raise some more energy. Maybe I should watch the Royal Wedding, or maybe not.

I'll get there, I always do in the end.
                            Cheers
