  • 1978dave - A Top Fella

    Just a Thanks thread really....... and a bit of a plug for a top spanner man in the Herts/Essex area.

    Six months ago when my last gearbox broke Dave sent me a pm offering his services as a local self employed mechanic to help out if needed.
    On tuesday of this week i took him up on the offer and we ran the car over to his workshop and we spent most of the day in there........ managed to get loads done....... my new Gearbox is in....... new Automotive extended/uprated Driveshafts are on......... had a crack at fitting an undertray to the car for the first time since i've had it but we failed on that one due to there being too much stuff in the way so we'll tackle that one again another day

    Oh, and also managed to get the front of the car lowered a little which has been bugging me for a while but couldn't do anything about it as didn't have any C spanners

    Dave has his own modified Escort Cosworth so knows his way round these cars very well and was supremely confident working on mine which was very reasssuring

    So if anybody in this part of the world is ever in need of any jobs doing i can definately recommend giving him a shout to do the work ........... cheers buddy

    Only bad news on the day was that the N/S adjustable track control arm had play on the ball joint So looks like i'll be needing a new pair pretty soon........... and they don't come cheap

      Is that the new dpe box or another std jules ?
      What was the price in the end on those driveshafts btw, p. or txt if you prefer ?

          Yep, Close Ratio DPE Box is on..........

          Oops !! Was supposed to get back to you about the shafts wasn't i In fact i still don't know the price as it was a real rush to get them in time for fitting......... so i've not actually had the invoice yet........ but, i think they are three hundred and something ish plus vat for a pair,........ which is a lot better than the GGR ones. But i'll let you know for definate when the ticket comes

                How's Pete's new box feel? Whats the longer gearing like?

                Should really give Pete a call and see if his still making me one Can you PM me how much he charged please mate? Just to give me an idea how much I gotta find

                  7 threads Jon Which is about half an inch.................... probably need to go back up one or two threads as the exit of my drive doesn't have a dropped kerb and i think i heard the very feint sound of carbon on tarmac as i went down it

                    First thought was very noisy........ but it's calmed down a bit now and i think we're going to go a little thicker on the oil aswell

                    Early days at the moment as i feel it's not polished all the gears up fully yet........ will be increasing the power gradually over the coming weeks. Pete's just gone to the States for 3 weeks so don't wanna give it the full beans 'til he's back.......... just in case lol.

                    Even just driving normal you can feel the benefit of the close ratio's as the car just moves more fluid like........ you don't get that big drop off from 2nd to 3rd and first is longer to come up closer to 2nd

                    The other thing i'm waiting on before testing it to the limit is how it gets on in the Britcar....... Pete just missed the deadline to get it in that car for Snetteron but it will be in for the next round....... which is soon but can't remember when off the top of my head........ sometime in the next month or so i think.

                    So i'll be watching this car with interest.............

                          Good find jules wish there was somebody who new escorts in the Kent area mate, think i have tried every supposed "expert" i know of down here, only need someone to do the little bits that i cant be bothered with and dont have time for. having 2 kids i dont get time to do nowt till 9pm then i cant be arsed to get out in the garage at that time.

                          Everything major/upgrades/problems still goes to the Legends at SCS
                          xflow way to go!
