  • Changing a lockset

I need to either rebuild my locks or change them, just weighing up the options and prices first on my MK6 RS2000

If changing the lock sets for new ones, will I need to do anything else like program the keys etc.... Or is it just a simple case of swap over and away we go?

let me guess sometimes your passenger and driver lock won't open and you have to jiggle it in the hope it catches and opens yeah ?????

Karl yes, well in fact all locks including ignition so it still could be worn keys, just trying to weigh up the options as I can get a second hand lockset for around 30 of the queens finest

nah got a couple of keys but none of them are brilliant, with one key I can unlock the passenger side and start the car with a bit of fiddling but can't undo the drivers side

Will take a pic and send it to you, just got to remember which key it is as its in my box with all the others

it could be the key if worn Bruv,i have never had a ignition barrell wear out though even on transits and i promise nobody ever has had more transits with lock problems than me.

THERE WAS A RUN OF BAD TUMBELERS ON APPROX 1995 FORDS,THEY WORE OUT AND THE KEY SLIPPED.

you can take the barrells apart and get the key number or look in the history,my cozzeh has the key number so i could just pop down my local ford distributer and get a key cut off the no.

if you pull the locks all apart and see the tumbelers come out note the numbers on them and then go a scrap yard and try getting say 4-5 passenger door locks out of a car that does not look worn out. fiestas usually have good passenger locks, then strip them and get the tumbelers you need and reverse fit them to your number and bingo thats the cheap way to do it.

i find walking into a scrappie asking for a parcel shelf for a escort as cover for wandering around looking for door locks to use works well.

done this a few times and while its hit or miss the first few times you try it its very rewarding to fix a lock set at a cost of not much if the locks jump into your pockets or a couple of quid if you let slip to the yard gaffer your intentions

You don't need to strip the lock to get the key number. It's fairly simple as long as you can count to 4

Hmmm might try getting new key cut first, but other than that will go down the scrappy and rob some locks, although it seems that £30 could save a bit of hassle and make the job quicker, and will just save my ear being chewed off by her indoors

i know you can read just the key

i don't know how to though and as i know how to strip the locks i can get the number that way, also if your fookin around fixing the locks if the tumbelers are worn its just a case of reading each tumbeller as it falls out, easy peasy that is for me.

so say its 1413 i get a 1413 out of a hardly used fiesta door lock and wop it back in and the jobs a good un.(just make sure you don't do it backwards like i had happen once )
i know when a ford key is worn as them tranny ones nearly lose all there shape in the end.

Bruv thats basically it,the last paragraph sums it up. its not that hard just a bit fiddly.

looking at how to read the key number still looks a pain in the arris so i'd still just pull the nackered lock apart and rebuild it with the bits from a good hardly used passenger door lock.
